11 & 14-Year To Set World Records at Compton Air Fair
September 2nd, 2004 Posted in Press11 & 14-Year To Set World Records at Compton Air Fair:
Youngest African-American Male To Fly Round Trip International & To Be Licensed to Fly Solo
Who:
Jimmy Haywood (Age 11) & Kenny Roy (Age 14)
Young pilots training at the Compton/Woodley Airport in the Junior Explorer Training Program of the Tomorrow’s Aeronautical Museum. Jimmy Haywood’s attempt is a miracle given he drowned at age 9 in a family pool, was in a coma for two days, and came back to life where his first concern and request was “can he continue to fly.”
Landmark:
Setting World Records On Historic Flight to Canada Jimmy Haywood (11) will set a world record as the youngest black American male to fly a plane round trip international when he flies to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and back. While in Canada, Kenny Roy (14) will set a world record as the youngest black American to be legally licensed to fly solo. Canadian law allows a pilot to be licensed at 14, versus age 16 in America. They will fly a Cessna-172 single engine plane; Jimmy has 20 & Kenny 50 hours of training; amd they wrote letters to raise $7100 in order to finance their trip. The Tuskeegee Airmen, led by Lee Archer their most famous ace pilot, will greet the boys and perform a re-creation of a typical World War II bomb run using a DC-3, a P-51 Fighter Mustang, and 2 Stearman bi-planes. Community Care Awards will be given to Lee Archer, City Councilman Bernard Parks, Compton Mayor Eric Perrodin, and Lamon Brewster, Hearvy Weight Champion.
